How to Prepare Kids for Your OC Family Photo Session!
How to prepare your kids for your family photo session....
Family photo day doesn’t have to be stressful — especially when kids are involved. As a mom and an Orange County family photographer, I know the biggest worry before a session is usually: “Will my kids cooperate?”
Here’s the truth: kids don’t need to sit perfectly still or smile on command to create beautiful photos. In fact, some of my favorite images come from the in-between moments — the giggles, snuggles, silly faces, and genuine connections. With just a little preparation (and a lot of grace), you can set your kids up for a fun, relaxed photo session you’ll actually enjoy.
Here are my best tips for preparing your kids for your upcoming family photos:
1. Talk to Them Ahead of Time
Let your kids know what to expect in simple, positive language. You don’t need to hype it up as a “big deal” (which can add pressure) — just frame it as something fun. Try saying: “We’re going to meet my friend with a camera who’s going to take some pictures of us playing and being together.” Avoid telling them to “smile perfectly” or “behave,” because that can make kids anxious. Instead, remind them it’s about having fun as a family.
2. Prioritize Rest & Snacks
A well-rested kid is a happy kid — so try to avoid scheduling photos during nap time or right before bedtime. Bring along water and a few easy, non-messy snacks (think fruit snacks or goldfish crackers) in case anyone needs a little break. A quick snack can reset the mood instantly!
3. Choose Comfortable Outfits
Your kids will look best when they feel their best. If their clothes are stiff, itchy, or uncomfortable, it will show in the photos. Stick with soft fabrics and layers they can move in. If you have older kids, let them help choose an accessory (like a scarf, hair bow, or fun shoes) so they feel included and confident. When you book with me, you’ll also get access to my exclusive Style Guide to help with outfit planning — plus, I’m always happy to give feedback if you’re deciding between options.
4. Embrace Their Personalities
Every child is different — some are silly and high-energy, while others are shy and reserved. Both are beautiful on camera. Don’t worry if your kids aren’t “perfectly cooperative.” I’ll guide you through natural poses and prompts that bring out authentic expressions. The goal isn’t a stiff, forced smile — it’s to capture your family’s unique story.
5. Remember: Parents Set the Tone
Kids feed off your energy. If you’re stressed, they’ll feel it — but if you’re relaxed, playful, and engaged, they’ll mirror that. Focus on connecting with your family instead of “performing” for the camera. The best thing you can do is laugh, cuddle, and enjoy the moment — the photos will follow.
6. There’s Nothing Wrong With a Little Bribery
Let’s be real — sometimes a little motivation goes a long way! I always come armed to sessions with packets of gummy bears to reward kids when we’re finished. And if a little encouragement is needed mid-session, I don’t hesitate to hand out a couple. Other families like to use rewards too — whether it’s letting the kids pick what’s for dinner afterward, stopping for ice cream, planning a fun family activity like mini golf, or even a trip to Target to pick out a new toy. Now that my own kids are older, candy doesn’t cut it anymore — so I bribe them with money or video game credits (hello, V-Bucks for Fortnite and Robux for Roblox!). Whatever works for your family is perfectly fine — the key is making the experience feel positive and fun.
Final Thoughts...
At the end of the day, your family session isn’t about “perfect behavior.” It’s about love, connection, and capturing the season of life you’re in right now. No child is too wild or too shy — and some of the best photos come from those unexpected, real moments.
